It’s incredible how one small idea can grow into something truly special. New Bern Pride traces its roots back to David Bucksot’s prom-themed birthday party. That night, he watched his friends experience real joy—some for the first time, others rediscovering it as their authentic selves. David knew this kind of celebration shouldn’t be limited to a private gathering. With the help of friends, he set out to share that magic with the wider New Bern community—and the first New Bern Pride Prom was born.

The success of that inaugural prom sparked something bigger. Just one year later, New Bern Pride officially became an entirely volunteer-run nonprofit with a mission to provide safe spaces and year-round resources for the LGBTQIA+ community in Eastern North Carolina.

Since our official launch in 2023, we’ve taken pride in the growing impact of our work. We’ve hosted more Pride Proms, started support groups, held community events, and launched a Safe Space Program—and we’re just getting started.​ We’re imperfect, but we’re committed. We’re learning as we go—and most importantly, we’re learning what our community truly wants and needs by listening, showing up, and evolving together.
